Review: Hereville (How Mirka Got her Sword)

(Alt text: Hereville- How Mirka Got Her Sword (Yet another troll-fighting 11-year-old orthodox jewish girl) by Barry Deutsch.)

(Click title for Amazon link.)

My local library has a fairly small collection of graphic novels. Much of the time, the ones that do show up are either adaptations of novels or decadently drawn romances.

When something that looks more interesting turns up, my first response is usually to dump everything I’m carrying, sit down on the floor next to the shelf, and read it cover to cover before putting it back. When I started Hereville, I realized that I would have to check it out and spend time reading it to fully appreciate it.

The interactions between the characters (particularly Fruma and Mirka) were irresistible. In many of the scenes in her house, you felt more like you were intruding on their private lives than reading about fictional characters. Mirka’s crafty explanations and schemes were absolutely charming; brave, yet still in keeping with her age.

It is easily one of the best graphic novels I’ve read in a very long time.

It was apparently a webcomic before becoming a book; the art is different, and I haven’t read through the webcomic yet to see if there are any major differences in the text. I still highly recommend getting your hands on a copy- it’s a good book to curl up with.

Go and read it!

niiicethings:

“Noun is a playful artist’s book about words and their definitions. It is like an exquisite corpse with words.

Starting with 27 real English words, each word and its definition has been divided into two parts. By turning the pages, you get to mix and match the word halves to create humorous and nonsensical new words and meanings.

With over 700 different combinations, this book is the perfect item for bibiophiles, lexicographers, writers, and any lover of words.

Here are a few examples of words and definitions you can put together:

whisper + umbrella = whisbrella: A low sibilan utterance for sheltering one from rain and sun.
banana + onomatopoeia = bananpoeia: A large herbaceous perennial tropical plant that bears fruit imitating the sound of the thing or action signified.
muffin + tyrant = muffrant: A quick bread made of batter unrestrained by law or constitution.
nomenclature + ancestry = nomencestry: A system or set of names for things derived from, or possessed by, an ancestor or ancestors.”

It’s like Ketchup on your Cornflakes for adults.

invaderxan:

One day in March, staff at the Scottsh Poetry Library came across a wonderful creation, left anonymously on a table in the library. Carved from paper, mounted on a book and with a tag addressed to @byleaveswelive - the library’s Twitter account - reading:
“It started with your name @byleaveswelive and became a tree.… … We know that a library is so much more than a building full of books… a book is so much more than pages full of words.… This is for you in support of libraries, books, words, ideas….. a gesture (poetic maybe?)”

Next to the ‘poetree’ sat a paper egg lined with gold and a scatter of words which, when put together, make “A Trace of Wings” by Edwin Morgan.

Nobody knew where it came from, nor was anyone forthcoming with information in person or online, despite a fair amount of local news coverage.

Mysterious paper sculptures found in Edinburgh, addressed to twitter accounts…

Working on the MOTN novel

6k words into this month’s story (with YOTN’s Month of the Novel), and I think I’m actually starting to get somewhere with it. It’s a glorious feeling when you’re tossing your characters around without a clue what they’re doing, and suddenly they decide to go somewhere completely different. I didn’t expect my main character to get herself kidnapped any more than I expected her to sprout wings and purple antennae.

If I can manage it, I’d like to get to 10k today.

Do you have any goals currently?
